Weyside Urban Village Phase 1 Consultation July 2022
On Friday 22 July 2022 the local community was invited to an exhibition at Weyfield Primary Academy, Guildford to view and comment on the detailed design proposals for Phase 1 of Weyside Urban Village. Following the exhibition, the design team reviewed the proposals in the light of the comments received to submit a Reserved Matters Application which has now been approved.

National Model Design Code (NMDC) Pilot 2021
Guildford Borough Council (GBC) has been chosen as one of 14 councils around England to take part in the National Model Design Code (NMDC) testing and learning programme. The focus of our programme running through to the autumn will be Weyside Urban Village (WUV), which, in contrast to the other pilots, already has a design code in place. As architects for the WUV hybrid planning application, JTP will be coordinating the programme for GBC.

National Model Design Code (NMDC)
The NMDC provides guidance to consider for new developments including, context, building type, facades and character. The NMDC embeds community engagement into the coding process and considers factors related to environment, such as heritage and wellbeing – helping ensure areas are well-designed and locally-led. It is intended to provide councils with the guidance and parameters to shape new developments in a way which reflects what their communities truly want.

Weyside Urban Village Community Review Panel
At Weyside, JTP has established a Community Review Panel of local residents and representatives from various Guildford groups and institutions.
The programme began with an outside launch meeting at the Stoke & District Horticultural Society Function Hall (Aggie Club) followed by a walkabout on Friday 16 July 2021.
This was followed by an online training session looking at design codes in general, the National Model Design Code and the Weyside Design Code in particular on Tuesday 20 July 2021.
The first workshop session then assessed the Phase 1 proposals for Weyside Urban Village against the Weyside Design Code and this took place on Thursday 22 July 2021.
Following a break in August, when the JTP team assessed the outcomes and prepared responses, there was a further feedback and assessment workshop on Tuesday 7 September 2022.
As well as the learnings from the process feeding back into the national testing programme, Guildford Council will also take on board lessons learned when developing codes for other strategic sites in the borough.
