Transforming a former gasworks site to create a vibrant riverside neighbourhood on the banks of the River Thames.

Following two days of stimulating and creative public workshops on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 November 2023 as part of the Beckton Riverside Community Planning Weekend, the JTP-led team analysed and summarised the outcomes and drew up a shared Vision for Beckton Gasworks (Phase 1), including an illustrative masterplan. The Vision was presented to the local community for the first time on Tuesday 7 November and again online on Monday 13 November 2023.

The former Gasworks is an important site in Beckton, owned by St William Homes LLP (part of the Berkeley Group). The site has been allocated in the 2018 Newham Local Plan for comprehensive residential-led, mixed-use development. The redevelopment provides an opportunity to bring forward high-quality new homes, a mix of other uses, significant public realm and connections to and through the site, including access to the historic river frontage.

St William is committed to working closely with the local community and appointed architects and community planners from JTP to facilitate the Beckton Gasworks (Phase 1) Community Planning Weekend (CPW), which was open to everyone. Building on the community engagement work commissioned by LB Newham for the wider Beckton Riverside allocation, the aim of the CPW was to consider issues and opportunities and help shape the Vision for the future regeneration of Beckton Gasworks and its relationship with the wider area through facilitated workshops, walkabouts and hands-on planning groups.

Vision Report Back Presentation

After the public workshop days, the JTP-led team analysed and summarised the outcomes to draw up a shared Vision for Beckton Gasworks (Phase 1), including an illustrative masterplan, which was presented back to the local community on Tuesday 7 November 2023.

Following the creation of the shared Vision, the team will develop the proposals and draw up a planning application for submission in Spring 2024.
