Lenton Green and Radford are city regeneration projects in central Nottingham, where 1960’s high-rise buildings have been replaced by high-quality homes for families and older people.

JTP organised and facilitated a series of drop-in sessions, and a Community Planning Weekend offering the opportunity to share views on the redevelopment as well as develop ideas for improving the surrounding area. JTP also prepared the Detailed Planning Applications and working drawings.

JTP’s design team have not treated the site as a blank slate for experiments in urban design, but have instead listened very carefully to the needs, wants and desires of the existing communities that the new development will serve. Older residents in the blocks to be demolished at Lenton Green worked with JTP’s architectural team to co-design their new homes within a state of the art independent living scheme.

New streets of high quality family housing at Radford have reconnected the area to the surrounding street network.

The buildings have been detailed to make contemporary references to the local vernacular architecture, both in material and design. The brick detailing and distinct gable-ends of the new housing on both sites, which taper up towards chimney stacks, reference the city’s industrial buildings. Perforated metal screens at Lenton Green are based on patterns from the lacemaking trade that was once Lenton’s key industry.

The scheme has been recognised by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) as a leading housing development in the region, and one which delivers exceptional design and architecture.
