A new residential retreat in nature

Larchwood is a glamping-inspired residential complex in Roshchino, designed in collaboration with GAFA Architects. Located within the pristine landscape of the Karelian Isthmus, the project offers a rare balance between immersion in nature and access to urban amenities and social infrastructure.

The forest is the project’s defining asset and guiding principle. The masterplan draws inspiration from the spatial arrangement of a traditional children’s camp, where buildings are carefully positioned within clearings between existing trees. Arranged in natural, angled clusters, the buildings form a sensitive arrangement across the site, preserving the organic character of the landscape.

The abundance of mature trees and the dispersed placement of apartment buildings create a strong sense of privacy and the experience of living within a forest canopy. Cantilevered loggias further enhance this connection to nature. Each loggia features one solid wall to shield views from neighbouring residences or pathways, while the remaining sides are fully glazed, offering open, panoramic views to the surrounding woodland.

A crescent-shaped sanatorium forms the architectural focal point to the community. Its broad outer arc frames expansive forest views, while the inner curve encloses a welcoming semi-private plaza. This plaza serves as the main entrance and the social gateway to the complex. At the heart of the community is a tea house designed as the social anchor of the neighbourhood. This intimate space with a meditation garden celebrates the beauty of its surroundings while encouraging neighbourly interaction and informal gathering. Recreational zones featuring sun loungers, outdoor dining tables and grill houses are seamlessly integrated into the existing topography. To protect the site’s ecosystem, elevated “floating” promenades minimise ground impact, while a treehouse-inspired playground offers a unique experience for families.
