Community Review Panel
The JTP team has started to analyse the community and stakeholder input received so far and in light of this consider the scope and content of the draft Placemaking and Design Guide. We have now set up a Community Review Panel, with volunteer members from across the borough, to help shape and comment on the Guide through the drafting stages. After an initial weekday evening online introduction and induction event on Wednesday 5 July at 6pm, the Community Review Panel will be asked to input at intervals during the drafting stage of the Guide as it develops. When the Guide is at final draft stage later this year, the intention is to engage again the wider Calderdale community over a four week consultation period, including an in-person exhibition. The Placemaking & Design Guide will then put before the Council for adoption as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) to ensure that all developments in Calderdale deliver a consistent and high-quality standard of design, creating a legacy for the future.
If you, or a nominated person from your organisation, are interested in joining the Community Review Panel or would like to find out more about the Panel, please email community@jtp.co.uk or call to speak with Charles Campion, Partner at JTP on Freephone 0800 012 6730 by close, 20 June 2023.

Background
In collaboration with Calderdale Council, JTP recently launched the community engagement process that will help shape Calderdale’s new Placemaking and Design Supplementary Planning Document (SPD). As part of the emerging Calderdale Local Plan, The Placemaking and Design Guide (as it will be known) will provide guidance to ensure that all developments in Calderdale deliver a consistent and high-quality standard of design creating a rich legacy for the future. The document will set out what well-designed streets, neighbourhoods, places and buildings should look like and how development should respond to and reinforce the distinct character of Calderdale. The Guide will also include advice on how to prepare and submit planning applications.
Alongside local councillors, the launch welcomed a wide range of representatives from local community groups, landowners and developers who were all invited to join a tour of Halifax town centre to contemplate how the design guide would work and be put into practice. The aim was to consider how the Design Guide could align with Calderdale’s Local Plan and the Council’s priorities to reduce inequalities, create thriving towns and places, and tackle the climate emergency.
A series of public events with the local community together with an online platform have been organised to invite local people to share their thoughts and help shape the emerging Guide, whilst also raising awareness of how it will benefit the planning process for applicants and the whole community. The events were held in Hebden Bridge, Halifax, Elland and Brighouse during May 2023.
