A new suburb influenced by landscape, topography and biodiversity

Kings Barton is a sustainable new suburb to the north of Winchester, which will be integrated to the city centre and with its neighbouring communities. Once completed, it will include 2,000 private and affordable homes, a primary school, commercial and community uses, public open space, sports pitches, children’s play areas, a village green and a town square.

Early phases have delivered significant new open space including the multi-functional green space, Winterbourne Meadows, which will accommodate naturalistically designed Local Equipped Area of Play (LEAP) spaces and green landscape fingers incorporating water surface attenuation areas.

A rich mosaic of green infrastructure features a central square and park, play areas designed by pupils from a local school, sports pitches, allotments and SUDs, including swales, filter drains, permeable paving, geo-cellular storage and infiltration basins. In addition, a 2km circular route will be provided around the site for pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing connectivity to adjacent neighbourhoods.

A consistent palette of materials is applied across all dwellings, featuring primarily red and orange brickwork which reflects the local vernacular of Winchester. Streets address spaces and pedestrian thoroughfares to create meeting places for residents.

Brick detailing around windows, eaves and gables provide interest to each individual dwelling with black stained timber boarding used as a feature material to bring a richness and distinct appearance to the neighbourhood.

A travel plan for the new neighbourhood was developed which set out the strategy for delivering more sustainable modes of travel for residents. A gridded network of pedestrian and cycle routes connects residents at Kings Barton with the wider network of routes providing access to destinations in Winchester and Hampshire. This will be further supported by a new dedicated bus service and Park and Ride alongside the transformation of Andover Road to become a green corridor into the city for pedestrians and cyclists.

JTP, CALA Homes and the design team also undertook an extensive process of consultation with key stakeholders and the local community, providing them with the opportunity to give feedback and contribute to the process of placemaking at Kings Barton.
