Alec is a Consultant at JTP with a background in the delivery of residential and commercial projects across London and the south east.
Joining in 2017, Alec has been involved in strategic regeneration projects across east and west London, gaining extensive experience on both detail and outline planning applications. His approach is focussed on placemaking and community, with an appreciation that successful projects extend beyond their red site boundary line and look to existing communities and the surrounding environments to aid the design, and build on the spirit of a place.
Currently, Alec is leading JTP’s work on Poplar Riverside, a key riverside regeneration project in east London which will transform a derelict brownfield site into a thriving destination of homes, workspaces and green spaces. He initially led the Detailed Design Application of Phase 1, providing 580 homes, as part of the initial Hybrid Planning Application of 2,800 homes granted planning consent in 2019.
From 2021 to 2023 he led the team in submitting a drop in application for Phases 2 and 3, with Phase 2 in detail of 989 homes; the redesign of the two phases achieving significant increases in the qualitative aspect of the scheme, together with a uplift of 55,000 sqm of residential area from that of the extant consent.
Alec was also involved in the team which achieved an Outline Planning consent for an important regeneration site in Osterley in west London. As a landscape-led masterplan, the approval on this project unlocked a site within the existing community to provide much needed public spaces, alongside 1,700 homes.
As part of a broad skillset, Alec has undertaken peer reviews on behalf of clients and within the JTP team, always with the ‘site’ as the main point for discussion. Recently, the most comprehensive of these involved a review of The Green Quarter Phase B RMA, and resulted in subsequent work on the wider placemaking and architectural character areas of the wider masterplan.
JTP’s focus on Narrative Placemaking marries with how Alec approaches new projects and bid work. This formed the foundation of Alec’s contribution to the successful bid and involvement in the planning submission on a catalyst site in Gravesend known as Albion Waterside which will deliver 1,300 new homes, bars and restaurants in a new riverside community along the River Thames.
Alec offers a technical, compliance, and practical viewpoint to architectural design at all planning stages; ensuring continuity from conceptual design through to built reality. This is coupled with a multi-faceted appreciation and awareness of all consultant’s needs, goals, and professional interests. His continuing hands-on expertise with modelling software Revit enables him the tools to communicate the complexities, and provide solutions on project challenges, experienced as part of a wider design team.
In a newly established practice-wide role Alec is bringing together the experience of BIM, technical review, and project management to aid ongoing efficient working methods at JTP. A major part of this being the industry adoption of the Building Safety Act, and ensuring the projects at JTP build on existing auditing and compliance records to ensure all future projects are recording Building Regulation Compliance, ensuring JTP continues to contribute to a safe and sustainable built environment.
