The first challenge is to reconnect these remote places to their wider context through sustainable transport links. From there, we focus on introducing a rich mix of uses that activate the site, reducing reliance on off-site travel and creating a strong local identity. For the first residents, creating a sense of intimacy and enclosure is essential. We apply Staged Placemaking to establish character, foster community, and ensure each phase feels like a place, in its own right.
By contrast, former military sites are often embedded within towns and cities, surrounded by layers of historic architecture and landscapes. These complex sites demand sensitive reuse and careful reintegration – challenges we embrace to draw out their character and introducing new homes, employment, community spaces and green infrastructure. The result is a unique blend of heritage and innovation, transforming forgotten assets into vibrant new communities.
