Trees, not just a finishing touch
If the UK is serious about heat resilience, trees must be planned as infrastructure, not just added as decoration or an afterthought at the end, writes JTP Associate Director Liz Liddell-Grainger.

The latest research by the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) on urban tree cover should give all of us involved in shaping towns and cities pause. The UK ranks 31st out of 38 European countries for urban tree cover, with the average urban area at just 17.9%, compared with a European average of around 30%.

At a time when heatwaves are becoming more frequent and temperatures more intense, those numbers matter. They tell us that, as a country, we are still underproviding one of the simplest, most effective and most generous forms of climate resilience we have.
