With the programme’s high-level aims now defined, JTP has taken the opportunity to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of delivering successful new towns.
Our new report, Creating New Towns, draws on 30 years of placemaking experience, including lessons from a decade of designing new settlement-scaled neighbourhoods at Houlton, Rugby and Alconbury Weald, Huntingdon undertaken with master developers Urban&Civic.
Through our collaboration with Urban&Civic we have translated ambitious visions into thriving communities, supporting the planning, design and delivery of mixed-use walkable neighbourhoods-anchored by high quality green spaces, social infrastructure and employment opportunities.
These flagship projects provide a compelling model for the next generation of new towns, demonstrating how communities can be delivered at scale whilst maintaining from the outset a clear focus on community, sustainability, legacy and design quality.
Creating New Towns sets out six key themes and offers recommendations and lessons learned to consider when planning and delivering new communities. By sharing these lessons, we aim to contribute to the development of news towns that support strong communities and offer a more affordable, greener, and healthier way of life.
