The project takes a retrofit first approach and sustainably revitalises the iconic, grade II-listed landmark with a sensitive roof extension to breathe new life into the new building. In total, the refurbishment will deliver over 500m2 of employment space on the lower floors and 80 new homes in either one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartments on the upper floors. Homes will be complemented with pockets of amenity space and roof terraces with the aim of creating a vibrant community that enhances and integrates with the surrounding area.
The design proposals ensure the preservation and restoration of many of the building’s original features. Drawing inspiration from the existing building, originally designed by Clifford Culpin in 1937, the new extension incorporates dark bronze metalwork for additional floors, resonating with the colour of the existing fenestration, whilst differentiating between the old and new elements. Strategic setbacks along the High Street elevation have been carefully considered to uphold the prominence of the building’s iconic clocktower, as well as creating layering to the overall scheme
