Central to the masterplan is the creation of a more connected and accessible riverside for existing and future Newham residents. Pier Park forms the new 3-hectare riverside park unlocking 800m of previously inaccessible riverfront for the community and extends the Thames Path with a continuous pedestrian and cycle route along the water’s edge. Along the western boundary, Armada Way will be transformed into Armada Greenway, a biodiverse linear park providing a soft, landscaped buffer between the new homes and the adjacent DLR Depot, while enhancing ecological value and local connectivity.
The proposals will also build on the strengths of the established retail centre, introducing a mix of shops, cafés, restaurants, community spaces, commercial floorspace and sports facilities to complement and enhance the local area.
Beckton Riverside is being shaped as a people powered place, with community involvement central to the development of the masterplan. Facilitated by JTP, a Community Planning Weekend was held in collaboration with the Beckton community, bringing together consultation events, heritage guided tours as part of Newham Heritage Month and a series of interactive workshops. These included a dedicated session for young people with pupils from Kingsford Community School. Over two days, participants shared their insights, identified local priorities and contributed ideas to help shape the emerging vision for Beckton Riverside through discussions and hands-on planning exercises.
