Organised around the existing Sergeants’ Mess, a stately Edwardian building which Weston Homes intends to retain and convert into apartments, Phase 4h features a wide range of dwelling types and sizes ranging from 2-bedroom up to 5-bedroom homes, with 5 affordable homes also provided. All homes are arranged around a pedestrian-friendly, permeable layout that prioritises connectivity, green space, and integration with the surrounding landscape.
The phase features a new Local Area of Play (LAP), and newly established pedestrian, cycle and vehicular routes that link to Mindenhurst’s growing active travel network and key focal points of activity. Landscaped corridors will connect homes to extensive public green spaces, including areas of Accessible Natural Greenspace (ANGSt), enhancing both wellbeing and biodiversity.
With a rich heritage, a detailed analysis was undertaken to understand the setting and characteristics of the local built form, use of materials and detailing. Phase 4h draws inspiration from the nearby Sergeants’ Mess which anchors the area’s rich heritage. Dwellings feature simple roof forms, the predominance of red brick, red clay tile hanging and contrasting accent materials in white, black and dark brown. The slight differentiation of accent materials is location specific with a view to create a striking gateway, complement the Sergeants’ Mess and to respond to the surrounding woodland setting.
