Currently owned by Solent University, Southampton (SUS), the site will be transformed with a residential proposal that will sensitively integrate into the campus setting and enhance both the built and natural environment within the site.
The project will deliver 73 new homes in a range of housing options from one bedroom apartments to five bedroom family homes, alongside 44 apartments for retirement accommodation. The proposal includes the retention and sympathetic conversion of two of the existing buildings on site which are both Grade II listed – the former cadets’ residence known as Shackleton and the former refectory known as Moyana – will be utilised to deliver a collection of these new homes.
A campus character is established by the formality of the site layout, which incorporates a rectilinear parade square and grid road structure. This is further emphasised by the linear building forms within the centre of the site with smaller detached buildings proposed on the eastern edge to provide a natural transition to the more suburban character on the eastern side of Newtown Road.
