Our recent engagement process for the estate regeneration of Chrisp Street in Poplar with Telford Living and Poplar HARCA typifies our JTP Engages approach. We have worked closely with local businesses, communities and residents to understand real life perspectives and what mattered most to them, with particular emphasis on engaging with younger audiences and their often underheard points of view.
This wasn’t your typical engagement process – it was fun, lively and full of energy. Hands-on tables with our team, a giant ideas wall, face painting, music, entertainment and creative workshops were just some of the approaches JTP and the design team employed to make the process exciting, engaging and inclusive. These tailored tools and techniques opened the door to residents of all ages to share their perspectives in ways that felt natural and enjoyable. Our reach was incredible – engaging with over 2,000 local people with over 4,000 comments, all contributing to building trust and the vision for Chrisp Street, resulting in 88% support for our plans.
Our engagement with the younger generation was a particular highlight with a young girl at the Chrisp Street Co-design Event Report Back Presentation highlighting the significance of this saying, “It’s important that children have a say in this because this is not going to be your future, it’s going to be our future.”
Another attendee who participated in the Chrisp Street Report Back ‘Vox Pop’ session commented, “The giant Ideas Wall, I really liked it, it’s good for everyone to read – you don’t need to understand architecture to know what’s going on so that’s good.”
