An outline planning application has now been submitted to North Dorset District Council for a high quality residential led development on land south of Gillingham.

North Dorset District Council has registered the application and will engage in a consultation period during which time the public can make comments on the application. The Planning Application Reference is: 2/2018/0036/OUT.

The North Dorset Local Plan, which is an approved planning policy document, identifies land to the south of Gillingham for the phased expansion of the town. Land at Newhouse Farm and Ham Farm which forms the central part of this planned expansion area is controlled by Welbeck Land. The area is allocated for about 1,800 houses in the period up to the year 2031. It also includes space for employment uses, open space and new facilities to serve the community. 

The central area includes:

  • 961 new homes;
  • a local centre on Shaftesbury Road with shops, a community hall, health centre and homes for older people;
  • a new street linking New Road and Shaftesbury Road;
  • expansion of St Mary the Virgin Primary School; and
  • formal and informal open space including allotments, sports pitches and children’s play areas.

On Tuesday 13 September 2017, the local community was invited to comment on draft plans for the area before the masterplan was finalised and submitted for outline planning approval in January 2018.

Welbeck Land and their consultant team, including masterplanners, transport, landscape and planning specialists, were available to discuss the proposals and to collect feedback.
