Charter Quay was an under-used and unsightly former industrial riverside site located in the historic town centre of Kingston-upon-Thames.

The site’s strategic location between Kingston’s market square and the riverside restricted pedestrian accessibility to the river edge.

This development fulfills many of the criteria of an excellent development. It provides high-density, mixed-use accommodation adjacent to an existing centre of activity. It has created new jobs, and provides accommodation for both those working locally and further away. New shops and several restaurants bring life right down to the edge of the river. The absence of traffic, clutch of decent venues, and public art has made the pedestrian square a high quality environment and turned Charter Quay into a new destination in Kingston.

Project Delivery

  • A new cultural and residential quarter to create a new destination within Kingston.
  • Carefully placed juxtaposition of high-density residential buildings to ensure most of the 244 apartments have river views.
  • Residential entrances orientated to open into public spaces to enliven and activate the streets.
  • A theatre, shops, restaurants and cafes arranged around a new, car-free, public square with public art linking the market square to the River Thames.
  • Design of new frontages on the market square to reflect the scale and character of existing buildings.
  • A new boardwalk and bridge to complete a missing section of the Thames Path.
  • Creation of a wetland habitat along an existing creek with new moorings for boats.
