Allerton Bywater is a former mining community which lies to the south-east of Leeds.

Following the closure of the Allerton Bywater colliery, the village was left with an economic and social void, a fate suffered by many former industrial villages and towns.

In 2000 the village became the HCA’s second Millennium Community; an initiative to construct seven new ‘villages’ that are intended to ‘set the standard for 21st Century living, and to serve as a model for the creation of new communities’ in England.

JTP were appointed by Keepmoat and the HCA to design a scheme for 5.72 ha of the site. JTP’s proposals would deliver the final phases of the 24 ha Allerton Bywater Millennium Village.

Project delivery

  • 189 new homes comprising of a mix of two and three storey new houses with two to four bedrooms including 20 elderly persons apartments in a single four/five storey block.
  • Proposals for commercial facilities to the north of the site, including retail, industrial and commercial units, have been carried out by Cartwright Pickard Architects for Priority Space who worked closely with JTP to ensure an integrated and holistic design solution.
  • The new residential development will establish a sequential story-board of experiences, spaces and buildings with a complementary yet distinctive sense of place. As the final phase, the new residential development will enhance the legibility and functionality of the wider settlement by reconnecting routes and establishing destinations along these routes.
  • Street arrangements with family dwellings forming home-zones behind the principle through routes.
  • At the heart of the proposal is Silkstone Square, which includes the focal building, a bespoke apartment block designed closely to follow the ten key recommendations from HAPPI (Housing our Ageing Population; Panel for Innovation) to accommodate the specific needs of elderly residents.
  • The Allerton Bywater Millennium Village contains one of the largest home-zones in the UK. It holds the only Building for Life Gold award for the Yorkshire Region, and is an example of a site formerly dominated by heavy industry that can be transformed into a thriving sustainable development.
