Vision for Graylingwell, Chichester

Following an extensive community planning process held over the last six months an outline planning application has been submitted to transform the former Graylingwell hospital site in Chichester into one of the country's most environmentally friendly mixed-use communities.

Working closely with client English Partnerships and joint developers Linden Homes and Downland Housing Association, John Thompson & Partners are leading a design team that includes Joachim Eble Architektur, conversion specialists Gillespie Yunnie Architects and Landscape Architects Studio Engleback. Environmental consultants are WSP, and Future City prepared the cultural strategy.

"We are excited at being given the opportunity to deliver a net carbon-zero neighbourhood at Graylingwell, utilising the largest photovoltaic array ever seen in the UK. The scheme represents another milestone in the drive towards sustainable urbanism, in which dynamic new places are created by combining sensitive, but technologically advanced architectures, with existing historic buildings and mature landscapes.

Through our unique collaborative process we have sought to embed the project within the local community, and provide this area of north-east Chichester with a new social and economic focus, built around the creative industries, that we hope will serve as a benchmark for future development."

A decision is expected later this year or early next year.
