Unanimous Approval for New Urban Neighbourhood in York

Phase 2 of JTP's masterplan at Hungate in York has received Reserved Matters Planning Consent. The £150 million landmark development for Hungate (York) Regeneration Ltd received overwhelming approval on 22 November 2007 with unanimous cross-party support by City of York Planning Committee.

The new urban neighbourhood will provide 720 new homes within York's city walls and will include offices, cafés, restaurants, shops and community spaces. Phase 1 of the development for 163 apartments and town houses is currently on site and incorporates a nature reserve and the regeneration of the historic King's Pool.

Phase 2 comprises commercial / restaurant units at ground floor level and 154 dwellings with a mix of studios, one, two and three bed apartments with underground parking. The residential element achieves an Eco-Homes rating of Very Good, with an Excellent rating being achieved on 15% of the dwellings. Other environmental initiatives include extensive cycle parking, solar water heating, car club initiatives, recycling facilities, green energy packs, micro-generation and locally sourced building materials.

Chairman, John Thompson said "We are delighted to have secured this latest phase of Hungate at planning committee. We are tremendously excited as the development will create a vibrant new mixed quarter in the centre of York which reflects the character and urban DNA of the city, and is a result of the extensive community consultation and collaborative planning process we undertook starting in 2002."
