The Avenue in Southampton Wins Planning Permission

JTP's scheme for Linden Homes Southern at The Avenue in Southampton has won planning permission.

The exemplar project to create a mixed-use sustainable community regenerates a 3.39 ha brownfield site which was formerly occupied by Southampton University. The Avenue is the practice's fourth high profile project for Linden Homes Southern in Southampton.

Unlocking the former educational site which is just north, and within walking distance, of Southampton city centre provided a unique opportunity to promote design quality and key urban design initiatives. John Thompson & Partners worked closely with Southampton City Council Planning Department, Linden Homes Southern and the local community to develop the masterplan. Over a twelve month period planning and design meetings were held, together with public consultation, to ensure a coherent and agreed design approach.

The scheme provides 227 mixed-tenure dwellings set within a mature landscaped setting which retains many existing trees and incorporates a new public green. House types include studio flats, one, two and three bed apartments and three and four bed townhouses with innovative terraced gardens. Together with a 65 bed sheltered accommodation scheme and the conversion of existing buildings, including a Grade II listed building into residences, the scheme achieves a density of 103 dwellings per ha. A new science block for the local secondary school has been provided and 70,000 sq ft of commercial office space has been designed by Aukett Fitzroy Robinson.

The Avenue is expected on site in January 2008.
