Suzhou Eco-Town Long listed for WAN Urban Design Awards

JTP is pleased to announce that Suzhou Eco-Town in Jiangsu, China has been shortlisted for the WAN Urban Design Awards 2011.

A team led by John Thompson & Partners (JTP) won an international competition to design the first phase of the new Suzhou Eco Town with a focus on delivering financial viability to enable long term sustainability.

Suzhou is a city located 100km west of Shanghai in the south-east of Jiangsu Province, eastern China. The 6 km2 site is predominantly agricultural and is located next to Tai Lake, the third largest lake in China.

JTP's approach to urban design was informed by agro-urbanism and based on the integration of all aspects of plan layout and lifestyles . The winning masterplan also embraces the traditional Chinese principles of south facing, east-west orientated streets and combines them with bio-climatic strategies applied at a variety of scales, from city to urban block, to reduce the amount of energy used for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.

The Clients for the project, Suzhou West District Eco Town Development Department, said of the scheme "...this eco-town will be an exemplar - a benchmark for the wider area...it could be the Venice of the East..."

The WAN Urban Design Awards celebrates and promotes the best in international urban design, transport and infrastructure and the jury will judge entries on a number of factors including originality, innovation, form and special quality, sustainability and context.
