St Clements in the running for 2019 MacEwen Award

St Clements, JTP’s regeneration of a derelict former Victorian workhouse in Mile End delivering London’s first Community Land Trust, has been longlisted for the 2019 MacEwen Award.

Run by RIBA Journal, the award recognises “architecture for the common good”, with a demonstrable benefit to society. Judges commented on an “especially strong” longlist from this year’s entries.

JTP is delighted that St Clements has been recognised in the prestigious awards; as London’s first ever Community Land Trust, it exemplifies the criteria by delivering a ground-breaking tenure of homes, with sale prices linked to local income in perpetuity. This means the homes are removed from the speculative property market and instead will be affordable to local people forever.

The new urban quarter was co-designed with the local community through a collaborative planning process, including a Community Planning Weekend attended by over 350 local people. It delivers 252 homes, of which 73 are refurbished historic listed buildings, with the new additions sensitively integrated with the creation of high-quality public spaces and green courtyards.

The winners will be announced toward the end of January.
