Planning Approval for Barton Farm Design Code & Phase One

Winchester City Council has granted planning approval for the Design Code as well as Phases 1A and 1B reserved matters which will see the first 423 dwellings of the development go ahead.

The Design Code is a set of illustrated design rules and requirements which instruct and may advise on the physical development of the site. The graphic and written components of the code are detailed and precise and build upon a design vision for current and future phases. The code is specific to create character, distinctiveness and environmental responsiveness and to ensure the delivery of a sense of place at Barton Farm.

Both Phase 1A and Phase 1B have been designed in accordance with the design code. The proposed layouts establish a series of streets and edges overlooking the public realm. Rhythm and order in the housing typologies, architectural language and landscape strategy will create a cohesive street scene with a strong identity.

Phase 1 forms part of wider proposals to build a sustainable new community over the next ten years. The development will be built over five phases and will be integrated into the city centre and the neighbouring communities. It will include 2,000 private and affordable homes, a primary school, a community centre, public open space, sports pitches, children's play areas, a village green and a town square.

Construction work is due to start on site in late 2014, with the first homes expected to be released for sale in Summer 2015.
