Major Planning Application Submitted for New Green Suburb

JTP's masterplan for a ‘green suburb' on 153 ha of land to the south of Worcester has been submitted for outline planning approval to Malvern Hills District Council, Worcester City Council and Wychavon District Council.

The application on behalf of Welbeck Strategic Land LLP proposes a mix of uses including up to 2,204 dwellings and a local centre with a primary school, community hub and shops as well as up to 14 ha of employment land. A Grade II listed farmhouse within the local centre will be converted to offices for a Community Development Trust. The Trust's responsibilities include fostering the creation of the new community, as well managing the extensive greenspace network, which will include play areas, orchards, allotments, a Roman Road and a system of swales - an integral feature of the sustainable drainage system.

JTP Partner Clare San Martin says "Local people who came to the various community planning events emphasised the importance of creating a community as well as building new homes. They stressed the important role played by meeting places and local facilities in building a community and the need to provide these from an early stage. Welbeck has taken this message seriously and initiated the creation of a Community Development Trust. A lot of time has been spent carefully planning the phased delivery of facilities to serve the new community as it grows over time."
