JTP's St Mark's Reach Scheme in Bromley Granted Planning on Appeal

JTP’s design for a 17-storey, mixed-use scheme has been granted planning permission by London Borough of Bromley on appeal.

Known as ‘St Mark’s Reach’, the project comprises community uses, offices and 52 residential flats, including 35% affordable housing and will offer 360° views over Bromley and it surroundings.

The planning inspector for London Borough of Bromley determined that the proposals will deliver a high quality of design and make a valuable contribution to Bromley’s town centre, whilst giving rise to few negative impacts.

The car free development will help to revitalise the town centre with new homes and jobs in a highly sustainable location, immediately next to Bromley South’s busy railway station. The building’s height will act as a ‘wayfinding landmark’ for the station, and the proposals will include improvements to the public realm and establish valuable new pedestrian links.

The ground floor of the tower will rehouse the H.G. Wells Centre’s existing social facilities, provide 1,467 sq m of new commercial space on the next three floors and high quality affordable and private apartments in the building’s tapering profile above.

JTP Partner Fred London said – “The proposed development of the HG Wells site represents a rare opportunity to enhance Bromley Town centre. The introduction of tall buildings in the urban environment is often contentious, so it is unusual to come across a situation in which a tall building seems to give rise to so few negatives and so many positives”.

Bromley is London’s largest borough by area and has one of the largest populations of around 310,000 residents.

Construction is due to start on site early 2016.
