JTP win twice at the National Housing Awards

JTP were honoured with two National Housing Awards yesterday.

The proposals for St Clement's Hospital picked up the award for Best Scheme in Planning and JTP also received the overall award for 'Provider of the Year' alongside our clients for St Clement's: Linden Homes, GLA, East London Community Land Trust and Peabody.

The National Housing Awards is a yearly event that celebrates the best projects in the affordable housing sector. We were very pleased to be shortlisted for our project at St Clement's hospital, delighted to see the project win in its category, and absolutely thrilled to come away with the award for Overall Winner. The Best In Planning award is for a scheme with planning permission obtained. It recognises the challenges that are faced when submitting a scheme for planning. The submission criteria focuses on the promotion of diversity and social inclusion, innovation, community involvement, environmental sustainability and contextual design.

St Clement’s Hospital is a former workhouse infirmary in Bow, East London. The 4.5 acre site, with 19 buildings of varying age and quality, has been derelict since 2005. The resulting masterplan proposes to open up the walled site to provide a new north/south route though the scheme connecting Mile End Road to Cemetry Park. The listed buildings on the site will be refurbished to a high standard, and further enhancements will be ade to the existing amenity spaces. The development will provide 252 new residential dwellings, of which 73 are in the restored historic buildings.

Once complete, a proportion of the St Clement’s Hospital residential development will come under the management and ownership of a Community Land Trust (CLT), the first example of its type in London, and the largest in the UK. This is an innovative way of providing genuinely affordable housing in an area of London where house prices are spiraling. In this sense it is a test-case for promoting an alternative to other affordable housing models such as council housing, and housing associations.
