A Home for All Seasons

We are excited to announce that our design, ‘A Home for All Seasons’, has been shortlisted for The Sunday Times’ Resilient Homes competition.

A Home for All Seasons, designed by JTP with environmental design specialist Ed Barsley, is a future-proofed, resilient home that works in line with our core placemaking principles.

The house is designed to provide long-term protection, comfort and independence through resilience, rather than resistance, to extreme weather conditions and adapting to inevitable changes throughout the course of the residents’ lives, and beyond.

It is a place to live in comfort throughout the year; whether torrential rain causes flooding, blazing sun causes a heatwave or the cold freezes over, our design will keep its residents warm and dry.

The Home for All Seasons is designed to anticipate extreme weather in advance, both through integrated technology – such as the smartphone app which warns residents of approaching floods, enabling them to move their cars to designated safe spaces on higher ground – and simple, low tech features, like the positioning of the living areas and power utilities on the first floor, and the versatile plan that can easily adapt to accommodate the changing needs of its residents and its context.

We recognise that it is more important now than ever to design for resilience, not only in a physical sense but social and economic resilience too, such as family growth and changing energy costs. And that it is crucial to design for the future, not just the present with a broad scope of challenges that will not come into being for another 50 or even 100 years.
