JTP and the Rushmoor Development Partnership’s plan for Union Street in Aldershot receives approval from Rushmoor Borough Council.
JTP is pleased to announce that our mixed-use design to regenerate a key part of Aldershot Town Centre has been approved.
Rushmoor Development Partnership (RDP), an Investment Partnership between award-winning housebuilder, Hill, and Rushmoor Borough Council, the project forms part of the town centre regeneration strategy and will see the ‘rejuvenation of the site carefully acquired by the Council since 2016.
JTP was approached in early 2019 to provide architectural design services and a placemaking strategy for the delivery of a mixed-use quarter that will provide 100 new homes, 128 student studios for the nearby University for the Creative Arts (UCA) and over 18,000 sq ft of flexible non-residential space for retail and leisure.
This is a great achievement for the entire team and a significant opportunity for Aldershot and its residents. Our masterplan unlocks a currently inaccessible, large urban block, creating new key connections and a landscaped public realm for the local community to enjoy.
Dominic Chapman, Partner at JTP
The newly proposed public realm, known as Union Yard, includes ‘maker spaces’ - self-contained pods aimed at the creative community and will form a bustling and inspiring new quarter within Aldershot Town Centre.
The scheme evolved through an extensive community engagement process in which all stakeholders were consulted to ensure the proposal delivers a place that aligns with the needs and aspirations of the town and its users. Key engagement workshops took place with Rushmoor Borough Council, Aldershot Civic Society and UCA throughout the design process alongside two well-attended public consultation events which were held in January 2020.
We are grateful to all those who have been involved in bringing the scheme together and creating this opportunity to regenerate this part of Aldershot. This scheme will be a catalyst for further investment, enhancing links to the creative sector, creating jobs and training and bringing much needed high-quality homes into the town centre.
Martin Tennant, Chair of the Rushmoor Development Partnership
The architecture pays homage to Aldershot’s unique character with inspiration drawn from celebrated elements of the towns heritage and history. Each detail is derived from its setting – from the varying plot widths, to the stepped roofscape and bespoke shopfronts, all of which combine to form our ‘Elements of Joy’ that ensure the scheme is firmly rooted within Aldershot.
The development is due to complete in early 2024.
