Icelandic National Planning Conference: JTP Partner Delivers Keynote Address

JTP Partner Charles Campion is in Reykjavik this week to give the Keynote talk at the Icelandic National Planning Conference, at the invitation of the national planning agency Skipulagsstofnun. Charles’ talk is entitled Collaborative Planning & Placemaking: Combining Professional Skills with Real Lives & Emotions.

The talk will focus on the importance of involving communities in planning and sustaining their places, and will include a range of international case studies demonstrating the effectiveness of Charrette methodologies in harnessing community creativity.

Charles will also be launching his new book 20/20 Visions: Collaborative Planning & Placemaking (RIBA Publishing, 2018) to the Icelandic audience.

JTP has been working in Iceland, with local consultancy Alta since 2003, on a range of collaborative planning projects including the nearly complete and groundbreaking Urridaholt, near Reykjavik, which features as a case study in Charles’ book. The initial Vision for Urridaholt was developed with stakeholders and the community through a joint JTP/Alta collaborative planning process. JTP’s subsequent masterplan created a mixed use, walkable neighbourhood, carefully integrated into the spectacular yet sensitive landscape.

Urridaholt went on to become the first international project to achieve final certification under the BREEAM Communities Standard 2012.
