JTP Pair Join Young Urbanists to Create a New Vision for Eastborough

Rebecca Frost and Sarah Halford from JTP recently joined a team of Young Urbanists from the Academy of Urbanism to create a new Vision for Eastborough, an historic street which links Scarborough town centre with the medieval harbour.

Eastborough, located in the Old Town, has pockets of pleasing architecture but much of the area is quite run down and there are high levels of deprivation within the local community. A £3m refurbishment of the listed Victorian market hall is imminent, which will bring it up to date and create a vibrant, 21st century market hub.

The Young Urbanists team facilitated a Community Planning Weekend on 15 & 16 January, at the invitation of Scarborough Borough Council, to engage with the local community and business owners to find ways to reshape the area, improve connectivity and revitalise the historic gems of the town.

Over 150 people participated in workshops, walkabouts and hands-on planning groups, and developed a range of exciting proposals. Following the workshops the Young Urbanists worked together to draw out a consensus Vision for Eastborough, which was reported back to the community on Tuesday 19 January and which received unanimous endorsement from the sixty people present.

The Vision masterplan and the Collaborative Planning process by which it was created, will now be used to inform an area plan which will form part of a bid for funds from the Townscape Heritage Initiative as well as Coastal Communities Fund.

JTP were pleased to return to Scarborough following the successful Scarborough Renaissance process, led by JTP in 2001/2, which engaged over 1,000 people in creating a practical Vision and masterplan for the town. Since then Scarborough's endeavours have been recognised by a range of awards including Europe's Most Enterprising Place in 2009.
