A Vision for a Sustainable New Neighbourhood in Norderstedt, Germany

In collaboration with Von Zadow International, JTP has recently staged a Community Planning event to create a Vision for a new urban quarter in the town of Norderstedt, Germany.

Over 120 local people took part in the ‘Perspektivenwerkstatt’, contributing ideas for a new 6.7 ha Walkable Neighbourhood on what is currently an underutilised agricultural land.

The proposals include 650 new homes nestled within the site’s iconic tree belts, known as ‘Knicks’; a new local centre served by re-routed bus services; and generous public open spaces.

Participants included local residents and landowners along with representatives from the Local Authority’s planning departments. The event included site walkabouts and a hands-on-planning workshop; to understand the issues and develop the Vision for the new neighbourhood.

This was the first time this process has been used in Norderstedt, which is located 25 km north of Hamburg. Margit Meergans, from the Department Sustainable Norderstedt, said:

“Community Planning, at least in the way this team does it, engages not only with local people but also with land owners, private businesses, wider interest groups and representatives of all relevant city departments at the same time – this is stakeholder management at its best!”
