Green light for Shaviram’s regeneration of Aldershot town centre

Aldershot looks set to benefit from major investment following a decision by Rushmoor Borough Council to approve Shaviram Group's residential-led mixed-use scheme for the redevelopment of The Galleries, The Arcade, and the High Street Car Park.

The council’s Development Management Committee resolved to grant consent for the proposals from Shaviram, a London-based private investment group, to regenerate Aldershot town centre, with almost 600 new homes set to be created.

This decision follows on the recent approval given to the Union Street East scheme which is being led by Rushmoor Development Partnership.

Against a challenging economic backdrop – particularly for the retail sector – there is now an opportunity to breathe new life into this historic town, with high-quality civic spaces; including a new public square, to provide a focal point at the heart of the community.

Speaking following the vote, Project Manager Chris Wyman said:

We are delighted to receive this strong, cross-party support from elected members in Rushmoor. It is clear that these councillors – along with the local MP who has welcomed the decision – share our commitment to transforming Aldershot town centre.

We are committed to enhancing what Aldershot has to offer and this development will increase the customer base of existing outlets, with hundreds more people living and working in the town centre. Our plans allow for a flexible range of commercial, medical and civic floorspace at ground floor level, to maximise the prospects of the units being occupied. By taking this approach, we will help sustain existing jobs and create new ones, including during the construction phase.

Through extensive collaboration with Shaviram and the Aldershot Town Design Team, we have created a truly animated urban quarter which is critical for the town’s ambitious regeneration strategy. A new public square for Aldershot will replace a monolithic shopping centre along with enhanced pedestrian connectivity. The feedback and support we have received locally – including through last year’s consultation event – has been tremendous, and we are pleased to finally be in a position to proceed.

Once planning permission has been formally granted, the first step will be to demolish The Galleries, ready for the first phase of the scheme. The project would culminate in the redevelopment of the Arcade.
