JTP is very proud to celebrate the launch of Changing Places – a new book which tells the story of the JTP London studio relocating in 2019 from Clerkenwell to Pennington Street Warehouse, Wapping, leaving a well-established creative district for a rapidly transforming neighbourhood in the historic London Dock.
The book charts a journey of organisational self-discovery. It shows what transpires when you embrace a neighbourhood, work with historic character, and take time to truly understand the personality, aspiration and everyday needs of your own business and talent. In short, it describes what happens when you practice what you preach.
Through our imaginative transformation of the Grade II-listed warehouse, JTP created a healthy and sustainable studio and collaborative workplace for our employees, clients and collaborators to enjoy.
An exemplar workplace, our studio was designed to respond to the way we work - creative, collaborative and project-based. This has enabled major operational change in our working practices, improved communication, flexibility and knowledge sharing whilst promoting healthy lifestyles and social interaction.
The design evolved through a collaborative approach. We engaged with our employees in a participatory process at every step of our three year journey, with workshops, surveys, workplace observations, interviews and practice wide site visits to gain a better understanding of what we required. Through this major change management process, we were able to introduce entirely new ways of working and a remarkable transformation of habits and behaviours from the moment we arrived.
We believe that our studio at Pennington Street Warehouse challenges the preconceptions of what constitutes a workplace. It goes beyond the adaptation of a building and its commitment to sustainability. The studio embodies something much more intangible. It is a place with a real sense of belonging.
We are incredibly proud that our efforts have been recognised by our industry peers with “JTP Studios at Pennington Street Warehouse” winning three design awards: the RIBA London Award 2021, British Council for Offices (BCO) London Awards 2020, London Construction Awards 2019 and Highly Commended in the British Council for Offices (BCO) National Awards 2020. JTP’s ambition to create a unique and special workplace through engagement with our people was also recognised winning Best Employer awards in the AJ100 and Building Design Awards 2019.
There has been a lot of speculation about the future of the workplace and what the post-COVID office will look like. Our experience and belief is that the creative and collaborative studio remains just as relevant and important as ever, if not more so.
We are very proud to have captured the story of our design, experience, placemaking methodology and change management journey in JTP Changing Places, putting ourselves in the place of our clients to design a meaningful and unique place.
