Alconbury Weald wins the 2019 Planning & Placemaking Award for Best Mixed-Use Development

JTP is delighted to announce that Alconbury Weald has received the Award for Best Mixed-Use Development at the 2019 Planning & Placemaking Awards.

The Awards recognise excellence in planning-related activities such as placemaking, urban design, economic development, housing and regeneration.

At Alconbury Weald in Cambridgeshire, masterdeveloper Urban&Civic has committed to place-creation of the highest quality, transforming a former Cold War airfield surrounded by 14 miles of razor-wire fencing into a new neighbourhood, eventually comprising of 5,000 homes, an employment Enterprise Campus, schools, sustainable transport links, energy infrastructure and community facilities – integrated within over 700 acres of green space.

The innovative Staged Placemaking approach sets the tone for the next 20 years, as Urban&Civic has worked collaboratively with masterplanners and architects JTP, and landscape architects Bradley Murphy Design (BMD), throughout the design process to create a sense of arrival and unique character for Alconbury Weald, encompassing high-quality homes, historically respectful layouts, natural landscaping and inspiring civic buildings.

Judges comments

JTP designed the masterplan for Phase 1, and with David Lock Associates prepared a Design Code that establishes a robust framework that sets a benchmark for high quality placemaking. against which the first 1,400 homes and mixed uses are being delivered including: Ermine Street Church Academy primary school; Enterprise Campus comprising flexible employment spaces; a Hub building with gym and café; nursery; shop, extensive public realm and children’s play areas.
