JTP Sponsors the 2019 Academy of Urbanism Awards

JTP was proud to once again sponsor the Academy of Urbanism (AoU) Great Neighbourhood Award this year. The winner for 2019, Kelham Island, was announced by JTP Partner Charles Campion at the Urbanism Awards ceremony on Wednesday 7 November.

The three finalists of the Great Neighbourhood category were Ancoats, Manchester; Hackney Wick, London, and Kelham Island, Sheffield. Each finalist demonstrated a combination of vision, collaboration and commitment but Kelham Island, former hub of Sheffield’s steel industry, won the vote by the Academy membership. 

Lead assessor for the Great Neighbourhood Award, Tim Challans AoU, commended Kelham Island for its retention and creation of industry. He said, “Local authority intervention has ensured the retention has consisted of some long-standing small scale manufacturing industries and crafts and created opportunities for cultural and creative industries and artist studios to develop alongside these without creating tension”.

Great neighbourhoods evoke positive emotions, shape our identities and are places we want to spend time and share with others again and again. All three finalists would have been worthy winners.

The AoU Urbanism Awards, which celebrate and learn from great placemaking, cover five categories of scale, including European City of the Year and Great Town, Neighbourhood, Street and Place. This year’s Awards were particularly focused on places that have been through transformation from a past based predominantly on industries to a new basis for their present and future.
