Hillhouse Community Planning Weekend

The Waltham Abbey community was invited to the Hillhouse Community Planning Weekend to participate in shaping the plans for a proposed new development at Hillhouse, including a health centre, a swimming pool and an independent living scheme for housing people over 55.

Background

Epping Forest District Council, Essex County Council and NHS England are working jointly on the following proposals at Hillhouse:

  • A New Health Centre providing accommodation for the current Maynard Court Surgery.
  • An Independent Living Scheme (sometimes referred to as "Extra Care") adjacent to the proposed health centre providing housing for people over 55 years old who need care and support and whose current home no longer meets their needs.
  • A New Swimming Pool to replace the existing Waltham Abbey Swimming Pool at Roundhills. It is envisaged that this would include a 25m pool with 6 lanes, plus a learner pool, movement studio for movement/dance activities, and a multi-use community space.
  • It is proposed that around half of the existing playing fields would be retained as playing fields and recreation space.

The Council has appointed architects and community planners JTP to work with the local community at the Community Planning Weekend to create a Vision for the new development.

What to expect at the Community Planning Weekend

On Friday, 18 March, 5.00pm-7.30pm, there was an exhibition explaining the background to the proposals. 

This background exhibition continued on Saturday, 19 March, 10.45am-3.30pm. On Saturday, there was also an opportunity to share local knowledge and help to shape the plans through workshops, walkabouts and hands-on planning groups.
