Duncan Thomas

Senior Architect
BA (Hons) DipArch RIBA

Duncan is an architect with over 15 years’ experience working on projects varying in size and sector from large-scale, region-wide masterplanning to detail level design. Over this time, he has developed a strong attitude towards character and context; focussing on analysing the DNA of a place, studying the urban form as well as the materiality and details of an area. This research is used to inform and inspire propositions which are both contextually sensitive but also new and unique.

Duncan has worked extensively across the UK and internationally, collaborating with multidisciplinary design teams and regulatory agencies, developing schemes from feasibility through to completion. Within JTP, Duncan has helped create the placemaking strategy for the redevelopment of the former Ford Car plant in Dagenham. Duncan devised the design narrative for distinctive character areas which incorporated the industrial heritage of the site. 2,850 homes, a community building, a design museum and over 6,500sqm of commercial space were carefully arranged into unique neighbourhoods. The placemaking strategy was then effectively communicated to planners, local stakeholders and fed into design guidance for future developers.

Duncan is currently overseeing the delivery of 345 homes at Skipton Road, Harrogate. For the past five years, he has been collaborating on the design and delivery of Oaks – a contemporary Czech village located in the countryside surrounding Prague, ensuring the original design intent has been translated throughout the design process from concept to construction.

Duncan has also been involved in the placemaking strategy at Battersea Power Station as masterplanner for the Phase 4A affordable homes development. Working alongside Patel Taylor architects, Duncan used the Design Code and Placebook to create a unique neighbourhood, which integrated into the wider area. A series of publicly accessible gardens make new connections across a formerly inaccessible industrial estate. A large NHS health centre, incubator workspaces, children’s play areas and outdoor fitness facilities come together to provide real benefit to the local community.
