A Vision for Hornsbruksgatan, Stockholm Community Planning Weekend
John Thompson and Partners ran Sweden's first Community Planning Weekend for Stockholm City Council.
Stockholm City Council wants to develop Hornsbruksgatan, a city street on Sodermalm island. The aim is to improve the links between the Hornsbruksgatan and neighbouring Hogalids Park, carefully integrate new housing, develop the 'brutalist' building above Hornstull tube station and make the area safer, greener and more attractive.
Over 200 members of the local community participated in the Vision for Hornsbruksgatan Community Planning Weekend held on 8 and 9 October 2010. During the public days people took part in workshops, walkabouts and hands-on planning design groups to consider issues and ideas for the future of Hornsbruksgatan and Hogalids Park. During the following days the team from JTP analysed the results and drew up a new Vision for Hornsbruksgatan, which was presented back to the community on Wednesday 13 October.
Key issues discussed included the quality and management of the Hornsbruksgatan, the use of the park, the reuse of the 'bunker' and the community's response to proposals to build new housing along the park edge. Many participants were opposed to new housing, whilst others thought that sensitively designed housing could add value to the area. If new housing is built it should be well designed and enhance the street and park environment including better access the park from Hornsbruksgatan.

A Vision for Hornsbruksgatan, Stockholm
JTP have been appointed by the City of Stockholm to work with the local community to create a new vision for one of Stockholm’s inner city streets. The Vision for Hornsbruksgatan Community Planning Weekend is being held between 8 – 13 October 2010 and it will be the first time an open, participatory community planning process has been used in Sweden. For more information (Swedish language) see www.hornsbruksgatan.se
A number of projects are planned for ‘Hornsbruksgatan’ by the City and their local development partners Wasted Space and Veideikke Bostad. The aim is to create a revitalised place by sensitively integrating new homes and other uses and to improve connections to the adjacent park and neighbouring areas. Wasted Space want to transform the unloved and underutilised building above Hornsbruksgaten tube station into a vibrant centre for the local culture; a small hotel and rooftop restaurant are also being considered. Veideikke Bostad will be the developers of the new homes planned for the street.
